Teach the Children Well: The Battle for Public Education
featuring
Diane Ravitch, one of the foremost authorities on education in the U.S.,
former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education, âwhistle-blower extraordinaire,â
author of the best-selling The Death and Life of the Great American School
System, Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the
Danger to America's Public Schools and other notable books on education
history and policy â incisive, comprehensive looks at todayâs American
public school system that argue against those who claim it is broken and
beyond repair; an impassioned but reasoned call to stop the privatization
movement that is draining students and funding from our public schools.
Governor Cuomo has been manipulating the state budget, holding up
its passage, unless it includes the hugely unpopular and anti-worker
practice of pegging teachers tenure and evaluations to his accepted, but
hugely contested by parents and educators, standardized tests grade
results. While dropped from inclusion in the budget the Governors desire
to see the proliferation of charter schools remains a mainstay on his
educational agenda. These issues have been been heating up ever since
Pres. Bushâs No Child Left Behind plan, but especially since the roll out of
Race to The Top and the Common Core State Standards so Building Bridges
decided to tackle these issues with with Diane Ravitch, who infuses research,
about the recent history of education policy reform, the strategies used for
fighting back against these policies, and who proposes solutions that work to
create sustainable, equitable, anti-racist, democratic and meaningful public
education. Our conversation with Diane Ravitch is for anyone interested in
an âinsiderâs lookâ and leading a resistance or forming an organization
towards reclaiming our public schools and reclaiming the public narrative
around education policy.

Let the Fire Burn: The State Orchestrated Terror Against MOVE!
featuring
. Ramona Africa, sole survivor of the infamous Philadelphia
governmentâs fire-bombing and murder of 11 members of the MOVE
family
. Prof. at Temple University and journalist, Linn Washington, a witness
to the infamy
We are approaching 30 years since the unconscionable bombing and murder
of Ramona Africaâs MOVE family by the US government, for which no public
officials and actual participants have been held accountable. Thirty years after
being at the center of a deadly encounter with the city of Philadelphia, Ramona
Africa still bears the scars of the horrific tragedy. She says it is not just her
physical injuries but fury over the orchestrated military-style attack launched by
Mayor Wilson Goode that killed 6 adults and 5 children of her MOVE âfamilyâ in
their home and destroyed 65 neighborhood homes. Ramona Africa and Linn
Washington tell the story of the governmentâs war against MOVE and highlight
the tragedy of why the innocent, parole-eligible MOVE 9 are still imprisoned?

Months of Organizing About to Pay Off for Brooklyn Car Washeros
with
. Santos Lopez, Vegas Car Washero
. Rocio Valerio-Gonzales, Labor Director, NY Communities for Change
Since Thanksgiving Car Wash workers have been on strike against Vegas
Car Wash in Park Slope braving the terrible winter weather on the picket line
and numerous demonstrations against an intransigent employer who pays
them poverty wages of about $300 per week and often no paid overtime even
for 90 hour workweeks. These brave immigrant workers organized a union
with the RWDSU demanding repayment of $1 million in wages stolen from
them, increased wages with overtime pay and protection from the chemicals
they handle daily. After 5 months on strike with wide community support
Vegas owner Marat Leshehinksy has begun to talk dollars and sense and a
settlement may be reached this week.
